Bed Bugs (Kutu)

  • Bed bugs probably received their common name from their habit of feeding on humans while they sleep in their beds.
  • Bed bugs have also been called “kutu”, “red Coates”,  “mahogany flats”, and “wall-lice”.

Where to find bed bugs

Bed bugs are known to survive in temporary or alternative habitats, such as backpacks and under the seats in cars, buses and trains.

They can also hide behind baseboards, wallpaper, upholstery and furniture crevices. Bed bugs can be found in homes, hotels, office buildings, retail stores, movie theatres and public transport.

Sign of Bed Bugs

  • Small red to reddish brown faecal spots on mattresses, upholstery or walls.
  • Molt bed bug skins, their white, sticky eggs or empty eggshells.
  • Very heavily infested areas may have a characteristically sweet odour.
  • Red, itchy bite marks, especially on the legs, arms and other body parts exposed while sleeping.

Reproduction Process

  • Female bed bugs lay one to five eggs per day, or an average of 540 eggs in a lifetime. They typically lay their eggs in cracks or rough surfaces.
  • Bed bug nymphs grow to full adulthood in about 21 days and go through five stages of development before they reach maturity. A bed bug will molt once during each stage of development, though a blood meal is required for a molt. Bed bugs are attracted to the carbon dioxide emitted by their hosts.

Potential risks they pose

  • Cause damages to homes and furnishing

Bed bugs can also damage the home interior and furnishing. As bed bug spread, it may cost hefty investment to replace home furniture and items. Thus, if your home has experiences with a bed bug invasion, it is critical not to delay treatments.

  • Allergic reaction to bites

Bed bugs bite to consume the blood of their hosts, but some people may have severe allergic reactions that can be life-threatening.

  • Sleep deprivation

Bed bugs can keep you awake all night, leaving you exhausted physically and mentally the following day. Sleep deprivation can lead to accidents, impaired thinking, heart diseases, and loss of appetite. In severe cases, this can cause poor work performance and even family problems and arguments.

  • Pressure

Living in a bed bug infested house can be very stressful and frustrating. Stress can lead to unhealthy behavior and habits like drinking and smoking. It can also increase heart rate and blood pressure, as well as affect our digestive system. All this combined can increase the risk of catching harmful diseases.

Control Method

Vacuum regularly, including carpets, rugs and curtains/blinds to reduce clutter in your home.

ULV misting at the infestation area.

Residual spraying at all internal perimeter of the infested area.
